Quality Improvement - Building a Portfolio
New knowledge and evidence requires that physiotherapists continue to learn and adapt their practice to maintain competency throughout their career. Including documentation of learning activities and a description of learning outcomes in your portfolio provides tangible evidence of ongoing learning and improvement.
All physiotherapists in Ontario are required to create and annually update their professional portfolios.
A portfolio has two mandatory components:
- Documented evidence of learning activities.
- A completed copy of the most recently released Professional Issues Self Assessment (PISA).
How to Build Your Portfolio
Choose topics or areas that are meaningful to your practice or patient population and record what new learning occurred and how you applied and then evaluated the change to your practice. Assessors and the Quality Management Committee acknowledge that every practice has areas of strength and areas that need improvement. Addressing those areas in need of improvement in your practice demonstrates motivation and awareness for improvement opportunities.
Monitor Improve and Evaluate
Steps to follow:
- Reflect on any learning that was meaningful to your practice - new information you gained from a conference or workshop you attended or that came about as a result of working or talking with a peer, a literature review, from an event that took place in your practice (critical incident or a new treatment approach) and that has impacted how you practice.
- The College encourages the use of guided reflection to support improvement in your practice. Using a guided reflection approach can involve starting with monitoring data or information to inform your decisions on where improvement may be needed. There are many opportunities available to collect relevant information about your practice for e.g. collecting peer or patient feedback, or looking closely at any objective data that measures outcomes of your practice or a review of current and relevant literature.
- Next, describe how you evaluated new and emerging knowledge and if appropriate, applied the new knowledge to your practice.
- Finally, provide a summary of what, if any improvement or change to practice you observed or measured. Repeat the cycle as needed.
