Who Pays for Physiotherapy?

Many people pay for physiotherapy themselves, or have some coverage for physiotherapy through an insurance plan. Insurers include private extended health benefits, insurance coverage through your employer, the Workers' Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) and Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) coverage through your automobile insurer.

Designated Physiotherapy Clinics

Seniors, youth and other categories of patients may obtain physiotherapy covered by OHIP at Designated Physiotherapy Clinics.

In order to be covered for physiotherapy services at a Designated Physiotherapy Clinic, you must have a doctor's referral and:

  • Be 19 years old or younger; or
  • Be 65 years old or older; or
  • Be receiving benefits under the Ontario Disability Support Program or Family Works; or
  • Have been overnight in hospital for a condition that now requires physiotherapy treatment.

Community Care Access Centres

Physiotherapy services may be also delivered in your home through a Community Care Access Centre (CCAC). CCACs have eligibility criteria for patients to receive physiotherapy and may have limits on the number of physiotherapy treatments available. To see if you qualify for CCAC delivered physiotherapy in your home contact your local CCAC directly. For a listing of CCACs, go to the Ontario Association for Community Care Access Centres.
