College Elections

Making a difference

Council is the College’s governing body or board of directors, composed of eight elected physiotherapists (PTs) from regions across the province, two academic representatives selected by their peers and seven members of the public appointed by the Government of Ontario.

Council members are, as a collective, responsible for making decisions that best serve the public interest and improve the quality of physiotherapists' care in the province. Council members are involved in establishing policies to ensure that College operations reflect corporate goals and safeguard the organization’s assets.

Why should I consider running?

The practice of physiotherapy in Ontario is self-regulating which means physiotherapists are involved in determining the rules that govern the profession, in addition to being accountable for their own behaviour. While the College oversees the rules and regulations associated with the profession, it is Council who sets the direction.

As a physiotherapist, you treat and assist numerous patients everyday within your community and practice setting. As a Councillor, the scope is even broader as you represent the voice and well-being of all patients and potential patients throughout the province. You will have the opportunity to contribute to the profession by helping to ensure the public interest is protected.

What's involved?

Elected Councillors serve a term of three years and in addition to attending each of our four annual Council meetings, they also serve on at least one statutory committee. This year, the terms of three of these councillors will conclude and an election must be held in each of their districts to fill these vacancies.

Although unpaid, these positions are rewarding in and of themselves and Councillors are compensated for their time and expenses in accordance with their volunteer roles.
