Becoming a Physiotherapist in Ontario

To practise physiotherapy in Ontario, you must be registered at the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.

The duty of the College is to make sure physiotherapists:

  • meet the standards of practice
  • deliver safe and ethical care

The Career Map for Internationally Trained Physiotherapists was developed in collaboration with the Access to Professions and Trades Unit, Ontario Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities.

Before applying for registration at the College, all applicants must show they are competent by meeting education and examination requirements.

How to demonstrate competence

If you have been educated outside of Canada, you must first contact the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators (the Alliance). The Alliance

  • reviews international education credentials to make sure they are equivalent to those of Canadian-educated physiotherapists
  • administers the national exam for all individuals who wish to practice as a physiotherapist in Ontario

Are you ready to apply for registration? Go to the checklist and find out!

Understanding regulation in Ontario

Orientation to Regulation of Professions in Ontario
The Ontario Regulators for Access Consortium (ORAC) offers an online orientation module to introduce internationally educated professionals to the structure, function, and context of regulation of professions in Ontario. This orientation helps in creating an action plan for becoming licensed/registered.
