About the Program

In March 2006, the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario received an investment of $515,600 from the Ontario Government to launch a project entitled Building Exam Writing Skills for Registration Success in Physiotherapy. This bridge training project was developed in response to evidence that internationally educated physiotherapists (IEPs) have consistently experienced a lower pass rate on the Physiotherapy Competency Exam (PCE) than Canadian Physiotherapy graduates.

The project aims to better prepare internationally educated physiotherapists to take the written and clinical components of the PCE. The goal is to align the success rate of internationally educated candidates more closely with that of Canadian graduates. This project was being led by the College, in collaboration with a Partners Group consisting of the Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators, McMaster University and ACCES, which is a community agency providing employment and training services to internationally educated individuals.

The project has four component parts:

• an overview of exam context and use in Canada;
• skill development in writing multiple choice exams;
• skill development in writing clinical based practical exams; and
• post exam follow up and support.

Direction and guidance for the Exam Skills Preparation (ESP) project was provided by the Partners Group and an Advisory Committee, which included internationally-educated physiotherapists who are registrants of the College, a health care employer representative and representatives of other regulatory colleges.
