Regulations

The Physiotherapy Act, through the Health Professions, Procedural Code, a part of the RHPA, gives the College the authority to develop numerous types of regulations that establish obligations for registrants. The regulation-making authority includes such areas as registration requirements, the rules around professional misconduct, the rules for the College's Quality Management program, and the rules for conflict of interest and advertising by registrants.

Any regulation that is developed by the College must be circulated to every registrant for their feedback. A proposed regulation must also be approved by the Ministry of Health, the provincial government cabinet committee, and finally it must be signed into law by the Lieutenant-Governor. This means that a regulation, once approved, has the force of law and as a result, all registrants are expected to comply with College regulations.

The College currently has two regulations in force. These regulations have been drafted, circulated to all registrants for review and input and approved by Council, the Ontario Cabinet and the Lieutenant-Governor. They are:

  • General Ontario Regulation 68/06. Made under the Physiotherapy Act, 1991, which includes the following sections:
    • Part 1: Quality Assurance;
    • Part 2: Funding for Therapy and Counselling;
    • Part 3: Registration, revised March 2007
  • Professional Misconduct Ontario Regulation 861/93, as amended Made under the Physiotherapy Act, 1991
