Does the College issue licenses to practice physiotherapy in Ontario?
Individuals who meet registration requirements are issued a certificate of registration rather than a license, this is because health regulation does not follow a licensure model in Ontario. Only individuals who hold a certificate of registration may use the title and practice as physiotherapist/physical therapist in Ontario.
Why should I register with the College?
You must register with the College in order to practice as a physiotherapist/physical therapist in Ontario and use the title of physiotherapist/physical therapist in Ontario.
Does the College register or license Physiotherapy Assistants?
No. Physiotherapy assistants are not regulated in Ontario. A license or certificate of registration is not required to work in these roles.
How do I verify that a physiotherapist is registered to practice physiotherapy in Ontario?
The College offers an online verification through the Find a Physiotherapist tool located on the website. You may search for a physiotherapist by name or registration number. The search engine will display all physiotherapists who are currently able to provide patient care. The list is updated every two weeks. If the physiotherapist you are searching for does not appear on the list, please contact gwong@collegept.org.
What is the role of The Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators in the registration process?
The Canadian Alliance of Physiotherapy Regulators completes the credential review process and conducts the Physiotherapy Competency Examination on behalf of the College. These processes are managed nationally by the Alliance to ensure that there is consistency across Canada.
How do I apply for registration?
You are required to submit an application package and supporting documentation to apply for registration. Review the Applying to the College section of the website for further information.
How long does it take to process an application for registration?
An application for registration is processed within ten business days of when a completed application and all required documentation are submitted to the College.
