Considerations When Starting a Practice

The College often receives calls from physiotherapists who are interested in starting a practice.  Questions may vary, but in essence, physiotherapists ask “What do I need to know from the College’s perspective?”  While it is not the role of the College to provide business advice, the College wants to be helpful in assisting physiotherapists to understand the elements involved in starting a practice. Many of the elements are found in sources external to the College and not all will apply in every circumstance.

For example, physiotherapists who provide care to injured workers will need to be familiar with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act and the expectations of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board whereas physiotherapists who are not involved in treating injured workers likely do not.

To assist physiotherapists when starting a practice, a checklist of elements to be considered along with links to key information resources has been developed. This list is neither exhaustive nor to be used in isolation but rather it is intended as an optional tool to aid physiotherapists in developing a comprehensive approach. Physiotherapists may need to spend time reviewing information from a variety of sources including seeking guidance or advice from their peers.
