Consent E-Learning Module

Purpose of the Consent Module E-Learning Module

When providing treatment to patients, health care practitioners have a legal and ethical obligation to obtain consent.  The Health Care Consent Act provides the rules with respect to consent to treatment, facilitates treatment for persons lacking capacity and ensures that information is provided to patients to allow for informed decision-making. The purpose of this E-Learning Module to help physiotherapists understand the complex requirements of obtaining informed consent.

Learning Objectives

  • To assist physiotherapists in understanding the
    Health Care Consent Act and the Substitute Decisions Act
  • To describe the circumstances when consent is required, who can give
    consent for treatment and the role of the substitute decision-maker
  • To facilitate understanding and application of the key principles of consent
