Exciting Times: Ontario moving to expand physiotherapy scope of practice

April 29, 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

On Friday April 24, Premier McGuinty announced plans to introduce legislation that will expand the scope of practice of a number of Ontario’s health professions including physiotherapists, pharmacists and nurses.

The announcement did not contain specifics on exactly what changes will be made.  However, it appears likely that the legislation will be based on the recommendations that the Health Professions Regulatory Advisory Council made in its reports to the Minister in September 2008 and January 2009.

This announcement is significant as HPRAC recommended that the scope of practice of physiotherapy be expanded to permit physiotherapists to:
  • Communicate a diagnosis
  • Treat wounds
  • Administer oxygen
  • Treat and assess pelvic floor disorders and
  • Order some diagnostic tests including x-rays, diagnostic ultrasound and certain types of blood tests.
