The College is not an academic body, nor is it an association for physiotherapists. It is a regulator, given its authorities by the Government and it exists solely to serve the public by providing you with the confidence that you are protected and will receive quality care. The term “physiotherapist” is a protected title. No one may use this in Ontario unless they have the education and proven competence and are registered with the College.
More facts:
- There are over 7000 active physiotherapists in the province of Ontario and each and every one must be registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.
- About 18% of all physiotherapists in the province are internationally educated, providing services to a variety of cultures in a wide range of languages.
- The College operates on the revenue from the registration fees of its member physiotherapists and does not receive any Government or other external funding.
- Before becoming a registered physiotherapist, today’s applicants must obtain a university degree in physiotherapy (this is usually at a Master’s level) and must pass a national exam.
- Physiotherapists hold malpractice insurance.
- About 5% of all physiotherapists are randomly chosen each year to be assessed by a peer (trained assessor) to make sure they are meeting the standards of the College.
- If you have a concern about your physiotherapy treatment and want to ask questions or file a complaint, the College is your point of contact to do so.
- The College is governed by a board of directors called a Council which is made up of physiotherapists, academics and members of the public appointed by government. Public members account for 49% of Council.
