Funding for Therapy and Counselling for Sexual Abuse

What is the fund for therapy and counselling?

The College of Physiotherapists of Ontario maintains a program to provide financial assistance for therapy or counselling for patients who have been sexually abused by a physiotherapist.

For health care providers in Ontario, the Regulated Health Professions Act (RHPA) defines sexual abuse not only as sexual intercourse with a patient, but also touching or remarks of a sexual nature directed towards a patient.

Who is Eligible?

If you’ve been sexually abused by a physiotherapist, you may qualify for financial help to see a therapist or counsellor. You can apply for funding to help pay for counselling or therapy right after filing a complaint with the College or once the College has initiated an investigation. Your application will be reviewed by staff administering the fund to confirm it meets the Patient Relations Committee’s requirements (see frequently asked questions below).

If your application does not meet these requirements, it will be reviewed by the Patient Relations Committee. You can find an overview of the application process in the Funding Therapy Application Flowchart.

You do not have to apply for funding right away. If you choose to apply later, you may still be eligible.

How much funding is available?

Patients who have been approved for funding for therapy and counselling can receive up to $17,370 over a five-year period. Funds are paid directly to the therapist or counsellor. The money can only be used for treatment required because of the sexual abuse by the physiotherapist.

If you also need financial assistance to cover childcare or travel while attending therapy or counselling please contact the College.

Choosing a counsellor or therapist

You are free to choose any therapist or counsellor as long as they are not a relative or have not been found guilty of sexual abuse themselves.

There are many different forms of therapy and counselling that may help, and you can decide what works best for you. The funds can be used for more than one therapist or counsellor.

You may decide to seek support from a non licensed care provider however in those cases there is no opportunity to express concern regarding the care you receive if this becomes an issue.

Please contact the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario at 1-800-583-5885 ext. 225 or fundingfortherapy@collegept.org if you need help finding a provider.
