What is a Regulatory College?

When you see a physiotherapist, you can expect to receive safe, quality care from a qualified health professional who is registered with the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.

The College of Physiotherapists of Ontario is the regulator for the profession of physiotherapy in Ontario. We work to protect and serve the public interest, and to continually improve the practice of physiotherapists, also known as physical therapists, by setting the standards for entry into the profession. We also set the standard that physiotherapists must meet for professional conduct as they practice. We believe patients have the right to safe, competent, and ethical physiotherapy care.

There are almost 9,500 physiotherapists in Ontario. Many health professionals provide services similar to those offered by physiotherapists, but only those who are registered with the College may use the titles: physiotherapist, physical therapist or PT.

Our work is guided by the College Council. It is made up of:

  • members of the public (appointed by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario)
  • physiotherapists (elected by their peers)
  • teachers and researchers (elected by their academic colleagues)
