Public Register Glossary

• 1. Name

  This section displays the physiotherapist’s name as it appears on the Public Register. Physiotherapists should not be practicing under any name other than what is displayed on the Public Register.
  
  

• 2. Registration Number

  
  The registration number is the number that the College issues to a physiotherapist for them to be able to demonstrate that they are registered with the College. This number does not change.
  
  

• 3. Initial Registration Date

  This is the date that the physiotherapist first became registered with the College. It does not mean that the physiotherapist has been consistently registered since that date. The physiotherapist’s history of registration is available from the certificate history section.
  
  

• 4. Registration Expiry Date

  Registration expiry is the date that the physiotherapist’s current (or most recent) certificate of registration expires.

• 5. Certificate of Registration

  This section indicates the type of registration that is held or was held by the physiotherapist over their history with the College. This section and the certificate history will indicate one of the following types of registration:
  
  

  • Independent Practice, Academic Practice, Inactive, Provisional Practice, Provisional Practice with Restrictions, Supervised Practice, Teaching Practice, Courtesy and Retired.
  • Independent Practice is the general registration category. A physiotherapist holding an Independent Practice certificate is eligible to practice independently in any area of physiotherapy practice in which they are competent to do so.
  • Independent Practice 4M is no longer in use. It was for physiotherapists who wanted to be registered for 4 months instead of the entire year.
  • Academic Practice is no longer in use. It was for physiotherapists who were employed at an Ontario university in a physiotherapy program. These physiotherapists could only practice physiotherapy within the requirements of their role at the university.
  • Inactive is no longer in use. It was for physiotherapists who were not currently practicing physiotherapy in Ontario. For example, those individuals may have been practicing physiotherapy outside of Ontario, on a leave of absence, or working in another profession.
  • Provisional Practice is for individuals who have completed their physiotherapy education, successfully completed the written component of the Physiotherapy Competency Examination and are registered for the next available clinical component of the Physiotherapy Competency Examination. These individuals must use the title of Physiotherapy Resident. Physiotherapy Residents can practice within the full scope of practice of physiotherapy, however, they must be monitored by a physiotherapist holding an Independent Practice certificate.
  • Provisional Practice with Restrictions is no longer in use. It is for individuals who have completed their physiotherapy education, successfully completed the written component of the Physiotherapy Competency Examination and were registered for the next available clinical component of the Physiotherapy Competency
    Examination. These individuals either did not attempt the clinical exam as scheduled or were not successful at the first attempt. This individual had to use the title of Physiotherapy Resident. Physiotherapy Residents could practice within the full scope of practice of physiotherapy, however, had to be supervised by a physiotherapist holding an Independent Practice certificate.
  • Supervised Practice is no longer in use and has been replaced by Provisional Practice. Supervised Practice had the same conditions as Provisional Practice with the addition of mandatory onsite supervision.
  • Teaching Practice is no longer in use and has been replaced by Courtesy Registration. It was for registered physiotherapists from another province or country who were coming to teach a short-term course in Ontario.
  • Teaching Practice certificates are valid for a maximum of ten days at a time.
    Retired Status is no longer in use and was for physiotherapists who have retired from the profession and were no longer practising physiotherapy, but wished to remain affiliated with the College.
  • Courtesy Registration is for registered physiotherapists/physical therapists from another jurisdiction who are coming to Ontario to teach a course, take a course, participate in a research project or a special event. Courtesy Registration is valid up to 30 days at a time.

• 6. Registration Status

  The registration status indicates whether a physiotherapist is currently registered with the College. Registered Initial or Registered Renewal indicates that a physiotherapist holds current registration. If the physiotherapist is not currently registered to practice in Ontario then the status will be one of the following: Resigned, Expired, Revoked, Suspended for Non-Payment, Suspended for Discipline, Suspended for Fitness to Practise or Deceased.
  
  Resigned is when the physiotherapist has notified the College that they no longer wish to hold a certificate of registration to practice as a physiotherapist in Ontario.
  Expired is when the physiotherapist held a time-limited certificate of registration and the certificate is no longer valid after the expiry date.
  
  Revoked is when the College determined that the physiotherapist can no longer hold a certificate of registration and the certificate was removed by the College.
  
  Suspended for Non-Payment is an administrative suspension that occurs when a physiotherapist fails to renew their certificate of registration or formally resign from the College.
  
  Suspended for Discipline is when a certificate has been suspended as part of a disciplinary finding.
  
  Suspended for Fitness to Practise is when a certificate of registration is suspended as part of a finding related to a physiotherapist’s capacity to practice physiotherapy.
  
  Deceased will be the status shown when the College has been notified that the physiotherapist is deceased.

• 7. Deceased Date

  A deceased date will be included if the College has been notified that a physiotherapist is deceased.
  
  

• 8. Other information

  If there is any additional information about the physiotherapist that has been deemed to be public information, other than what is normally included on the Public Register, it will be recorded in this section. For example, if a Committee of the College has decided that additional information about a physiotherapist should appear on the Public Register it would be included in this section.

• 9. Current Employment Information

  All current employment information for a physiotherapist will be provided on the Public Register. The name of the employment site will be shown. The address and business phone number of the employment site is available, as is information about the physiotherapist’s practice including:

  • area of practice, which lists the specific areas that a physiotherapist works in,
    for example, orthopedics or neurology
  • patient population, which indicates whether the physiotherapist works with adult,
    geriatric, pediatric patients or patients of all ages
  • past employment locations

• 10. Language Fluency

  This section indicates all languages in which the physiotherapist is capable of providing patient care.
  
  

• 11. Former Names

  This section indicates all the previous last names in which the physiotherapist was registered under or completed their physiotherapy education under, if the physiotherapist has any former names.
  
  

• 12. Educational History

  This section contains the name of the educational institution and the year in which the individual completed the educational credential that qualified the physiotherapist for registration with the College.
  
  

• 13. Professional Conduct

  This section contains any information about previous findings as a result of a hearing, a summary of the hearing details and any information about additional terms, conditions or limitations that are a result of professional conduct issues.

  • Criminal Convictions—all Criminal Code and Health Insurance Act convictions, known to the College. Information will include the finding, the sentence, if it is under appeal, a notation indicating this and the dates of this information if the College knows it. This information would be removed upon request if an appeal is successful or the member is pardoned.

  • Bail Conditions—information about the bail condition will be posted on the Public Register if the College knows about these conditions and they have been determined to be relevant to a physiotherapist’s ability to practice.

  • Criminal Charges—all Criminal Code and Health Insurance Act charges, known to the College. Information will include the fact and content of the charge and the place and date of the charge, if known.

  • Cautions—a summary of any decision where a caution is ordered by the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee for investigations. A caution is ordered when the Committee has a significant concern about conduct or practice that can have a direct impact on patient care, safety or the public interest if it is not addressed.

  • Undertakings—if educational or remediation needs for a physiotherapist are identified by the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee, the physiotherapist will be given the option to voluntarily agree to undertake some additional learning or remediation. This might include taking educational courses (e.g., record keeping, ethics or communications) or one-on-one instruction. There may also be a
    reassessment component to make certain that remediation was successful.

  • Specified Continuing Education or Remediation Program (SCERPs)–if educational or remediation needs for a physiotherapist are identified by the Inquiries, Complaints and Reports Committee, a PT may be required to take a specified continuing education or remediation program (SCERP). This might include taking
    educational courses (e.g., record keeping, ethics or communications) or one-on-one instruction. There may also be a reassessment component to make certain that remediation was successful.

  • Professional misconduct or incompetence findings in other jurisdictions or professions—information about the fact of the finding, the date of the finding, and the name of the governing body that made the finding will be posted on the Public Register if known.

  • Licences/or registration in other jurisdictions—the College will post current licences and certificates of registration held in other jurisdictions when the College is aware. As well, information about registration with other regulated professions will appear.

  • Working with Physiotherapist Assistants—if a physiotherapist has declared that they work with physiotherapist assistants this fact will appear on the Public Register (pending technology upgrades).

• 14. Professional Corporations

  This section includes a list of all physiotherapy professional corporations of which the physiotherapist is a shareholder or director. Professional Corporations are a distinct type of corporation as defined in legislation.
  
  Only physiotherapists may own shares and be a director of a physiotherapy professional corporation.
  

  Certificate History

  This section includes the history of the certificates of registration held by a physiotherapist. The information available also indicates the type of certificate of registration that was held, the dates of registration and includes a note about any terms, conditions or limitations on the certificate of registration that are a result of a decision
  made by a Committee of the College and information about any other status changes.
  

  Professional Corporations Register

  This section contains a listing of all current and former professional corporations that have been registered with the College.
  The listings contain the following information about each professional corporation:

  • Certificate of authorization number
  • Corporation name
  • Business address
  • Contact information: corporate phone number, fax number and email address
  • Initial registration date of the corporation
  • Expiry date of the current or most recent certificate of authorization
  • Status of the corporation’s certificate of authorization
  • A description of the activities conducted by the corporation
  • A list of the facilities associated with the professional corporation
  • A list of all of the corporation’s current directors and shareholders

  Status

  The registration status indicates whether a professional corporation is currently registered with the College. Active status indicates that a professional corporation is currently registered with a valid Certificate of Authorization from the College. When a professional corporation no longer holds a valid Certificate of Authorization, the status will be one of the following: Expired, Dissolved, Merged or Revoked.

• 15. Rosters

  Effective February 1, 2012, physiotherapists must roster to perform authorized activities.
  Rostering or getting on a roster is the process where physiotherapists add their names to a list indicating they have the required training, education and experience to safely perform the higher risk activity. Physiotherapists must roster for each of the authorized activities they perform in their practice. Rostering can be completed online and is mandatory for any physiotherapist doing these identified authorized activities under their own authority. The only exception is communicating a diagnosis. This authorized activity does not require rostering as it is considered an essential competency.
  
  Physiotherapists must roster for the following activities:

  • tracheal suctioning
  • spinal manipulation
  • acupuncture (including dry needling)
  • treating a wound below the dermis
  • assessing or rehabilitating pelvic musculature and
  • administering a substance by inhalation
