Truth and Reconciliation Week: September 27 to October 1, 2021

September 27 to October 1 is Truth and Reconciliation Week in Canada. This national educational program continues the conversation about the truths of First Nations Treaties, the Métis and Inuit Land Claims, and the legacy of the residential school system.

Truth and Reconciliation Week dedicates a day each to Land and Treaties, Languages and Culture, Truth and Reconciliation, Orange Shirt Day and Elder-Youth Knowledge Transfer.

The National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation is offering a full week of online Truth and Reconciliation Programming that is available to the general public.

In order to redress the legacy of residential schools and advance the process of Canadian reconciliation, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada has released 94 Calls to Action. We encourage everyone to review this report.

September 30, 2021 marks the first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

This day honours the lost children and Survivors of residential schools, their families and communities. Public commemoration of the tragic and painful history and ongoing impacts of residential schools is a vital component of the reconciliation process.

September 30 also marks Orange Shirt Day. Orange Shirt Day is an Indigenous-led grassroots commemorative day that honours the children who survived Indian Residential Schools and remembers those who did not.

On September 30, we encourage all Canadians to wear orange to raise awareness of the very tragic legacy of residential schools, and to honour the thousands of Survivors.
