• What information do I need to give to the College when I am about to go on a maternity, parental or extended leave?

  If you are going on leave you have two options:
  
  1. If you do not plan to use your PT title during this time, you can resign your registration for the time you are planning to be off. This means you need to let the College know – through the PT Portal – of your intention. If you resign between April 1st and December 31st, you can apply for a fee credit. The fee credit amount is based on the days remaining in the registration year and is valid for one year. You will need to reapply to the College to re-register, this can take up to two weeks.
  
  2. You have the option to remain registered. If you choose this option, you must update the PT Portal with your last date at work and update your contact details so the College can reach you during your absence to make you aware of mandatory activities, such as annual renewal, PISA or Jurisprudence that might take place during your leave but you are still required to complete. Contact the Registration team with questions. 
  
  

• What do I need to do when I am returning from a maternity, parental or extended leave?

  Please contact the College at least two weeks before returning to work. You must re-apply for registration by completing an Independent Practice form. If you have applied for a fee credit within the last 12 months, you can use it towards the fee when you return. Contact the Registration department to learn more.

• Do I need insurance coverage when I take parental leave, and I am not practicing? What should I look for in my insurance policy?

  Yes, you need insurance coverage. Your plan must include tail coverage. The standard coverage is for 12 months of leave but first check directly with your insurance provider.

  The policy should also provide coverage for claims made up to 10 years after you stop practicing; that is, patients may claim against your practice period after it ends.

  Your insurance policy should have:

  • a minimum coverage of $5 million dollars for the annual policy period
  • a liability limit of at least $5 million dollars per incident
  • no additional terms, conditions or exclusions, other than standard
  • no deductible
  • coverage for claims made up to 10 years after you stop practicing; that is, patients may claim against your practice period after it ends.

  Two commonly used insurance providers for professional physiotherapists are the Canadian Physiotherapy Association and Physiosure. There are, of course, many other independent choices.
